The Business Challenge
Ballymun Regeneration Ltd was established in 1997, to plan and implement a regeneration programme which would result in a new Ballymun town with new and improved facilities. As well as housing development, the regeneration programme includes a multitude of arts, environmental action, recreational and training opportunities. As a part of this programme, BRL wanted to help develop a community programme which would combat social and economic disadvantage, and provide an opportunity for children to learn through the arts.

The Solution
The Ballymun Music Programme and its home at the Ballymun Music Room grew out of a initiative which was funded by the Department of Education and Science and the Dublin Institute of Technology, in St Joseph’s Primary School in Poppintree. The Music Programme uses music as a vehicle for the personal and academic development of children. It offered opportunities to extend children’s potential through involvement with the arts and could be expanded to all schools in Ballymun.

Benefits to Company
The Ballymun Music Room was opened in 2009 and was developed by Ballymun Regeneration Ltd. As the Music Programme fulfilled many of the company’s objectives, developing a permanent home for it was the next stage in its evolution. This partnership has succeeded at enhancing relationships between BRL, local schools and the community, and has embedded a partnership based approach between the main stakeholders.

Benefits to Stakeholders
Since it started ten years ago, this programme has grown to involve children from seven primary and secondary schools in Ballymun and has about 700 children involved each year. There are multiple benefits for participant children. Performing together gives them skills such as listening, concentrating, learning to negotiate, team building, building relationships with their peers as well as developing self esteem and confidence.
