The Beacon Hospital & Alva Gallagher
The Business Challenge
When the Beacon Hospital was in its final stage of completion and it could be seen where natural light and shading fell, the Beacon Medical Group sought to commission a sculpture that represented the philosophy, objectives, vision and ideals of the Hospital.

The Solution
Alva Gallagher developed a proposal which responded to the contemporary, empathetic and visionary personality of the hospital. She successfully received the commission and created Life Protected - a crystal oyster cradled in a five foot bronze shell on a white Portland cement base with seaweed detail.

Benefits to Company
The chosen work acts as metaphor for the fragility of life and the life that is protected, healed and nurtured within the walls of the Beacon Hospital. It reflects the hospital’s culture which is built upon three pillars – excellence in physician relationships, employee trust and community involvement. The commission is also considerate of the interior properties and the allocated space for the piece in the hospital.

Benefits to Stakeholders
The solid crystal pearl refracts and reflects natural light by day and night and evokes a warm welcome for patients and staff at the hospital entrance. The sculpture has served as inspiration for a successful new body of work by Alva Gallagher which can now be found in many private collections.
