‘White Light Garden’ by Vivenne Roche at Park West Business Park
The Business Challenge
During construction of the Park West Business Park in early 1999, human skeletons and artefacts were unearthed by Harcourt Developments. Subsequent excavations concluded that an early Christian burial ground had been discovered. While the design of the buildings around the site responded sensitively to this discovery, Harcourt sought to commission an artist to create a sculpture to appropriately commemorate the history of the area.

The Solution
Using a variety of materials, forms and modern technology, artist Vivienne Roche created a sculpture garden called Whitelight Garden. By day the garden is a public park with seating areas, pathways and a running track around the perimeter while by night it is transformed into a light sculpture which reflects and defines the walls and graves beneath.

Benefits to Company
Harcourt Development’s philosophy integrates cultural and artistic elements into their developments. Whitelight Garden, which took seven years to complete, is a unique artistic, environmental and historical commemoration of the site’s past. It demonstrates the importance the company places on being recognised as a responsible patron of the arts.

Benefits to Stakeholders
Harcourt Development’s visual arts strategy which is implemented in their development sites enhances the living, working and social environments which they create. The commissioned works help to stimulate discussion and appreciation of art and culture among their users and the general public.
