A&L Goodbody Writer-in-Residence Programme

A programme to improve creativity and literacy in a primary school in the Dublin Docklands.

The Brief

Business to Arts was asked to build on A&L Goodbody’s existing partnership with SUAS and to enhance this partnership with a bespoke creative writing and literacy programme.

Our Process

Between 2016 - 2019, Business to Arts conducted planning and coordination meetings with A&L Goodbody and SUAS to align objectives and establish program parameters. Collaboratively, a tailored creative writing and literacy programme for third to sixth-class pupils was designed.

We identified Catherine Ann Cullen, a children's author, and poet, to be the Writer-in-Residence. Catherine guided students in workshops exploring poetry, prose, and songwriting. Annual showcase events were organised, allowing students to perform their songs in front of supportive audiences. Through this process, we aimed to inspire creativity, improve literacy skills, and provide a platform for self-expression.

Outcomes

  • Weekly creative writing sessions throughout the school year, aiming to enhance writing and reading skills
  • Creation of a diverse range of work including poetry, short stories, raps, and songs inspired by the local community
  • Annual showcase events to display the pupils' work and provide an opportunity for performance in front of an audience

Impact

  • Improved writing and reading skills of the participating pupils through creative engagement
  • Enhanced literacy outcomes among primary pupils in designated disadvantaged communities
  • Strengthened collaboration between A&L Goodbody and SUAS in promoting education and literacy initiatives
  • Empowered pupils to express themselves through various creative mediums, boosting their confidence and self-expression
  • Increased community engagement and involvement through the showcase events, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment
  • Demonstrated A&L Goodbody's commitment to supporting education, fostering creativity, and making a positive impact in local communities.
