KINDRED by Liz Roche Company and Lightscape commissioned by ESB

A commission by ESB to mark the opening of their new sustainable offices at 27 Fitzwilliam Street.

The Brief

As part of the ESB Brighter Future Arts Fund, ESB wished to commission a new artwork that would respond to and enliven their newly developed carbon-neutral head offices at 27 Lower Fitzwilliam Street.

Our Process

The commission for ESB was conducted under the umbrella of the Brighter Future Arts Fund, a donor-advised fund to support arts projects which engage with themes of climate and de-carbonisation. As such, 12 artists and arts organisations who engage with these themes were invited and paid to develop a proposal.

Business to Arts worked with ESB to create a detailed artists brief that provided details of the proposed building structure, identifying key areas of activation and artistic potential. A wide variety of art forms were represented in the received proposals including dance, murals, festivals, opera, theatre, and technology.

The successful proposal was put forward by Dublin Dance Festival. Their integration of technology, public engagement, and sustainability made their proposal stand out. Dublin Dance Festival developed a commissioning brief and then worked with Lightscape to create the technologically enhanced performance element which they then brought to ESB. Once Liz Roche Company had been chosen to develop the commissioned, the piece evolved to become a key element of Dublin Dance Festival 2023, with a launch event taking place in ESB's headquarters with a bespoke performance of KINDRED for attendees.

The work was then free to view for the general public for one week of Dublin Dance Festival.
